Safe, quick, and highly effective

Vasectomy in Toronto

A vasectomy is a minor outpatient procedure that provides permanent birth control for men. It’s a simple and permanent form of contraception that doesn’t affect your hormones, sex drive, or ejaculation.

Why Choose a Vasectomy?

Many men seek a permanent solution to birth control that eliminates the need for condoms or hormonal contraception for their partner. A vasectomy offers exactly that – simple, safe, and reliable.

Compared to female sterilization, vasectomy is less invasive, requires a shorter recovery, and is typically performed under local anesthetic. It’s a preferred option for couples ready to take the next step in family planning.

The Process

Consultation & Evaluation

We review your health history and discuss your family planning goals. This step ensures that the vasectomy is the right option for you, for the long term.

The Procedure

Performed under local anesthesia (general anesthesia available), the procedure takes about 15–20 minutes. A small portion of each vas deferens is removed and the ends sealed to prevent sperm from entering the semen.

Recovery & Follow-Up

You may experience mild swelling or discomfort for a few days. You may use bags of frozen peas or ice packs to help decrease the swelling. Most men are back to work within a couple of days, with minimal disruption to daily life. You should avoid vigorous exercise, bike riding, and heavy lifting for 7-10 days. A semen analysis is done 8-12 weeks later to confirm sterility. Until then, you must use alternative birth control.

Common Questions

A vasectomy permanently prevents sperm from entering semen. It involves removing and sealing part of the vas deferens – the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles. Ejaculation still occurs normally.

Vasectomy is over 99% effective. However, it doesn’t work immediately. You’ll need a semen test at 8-12 weeks to confirm no sperm remains.

No. Erections, orgasm, ejaculation, and libido stay the same. The only change is the absence of sperm in the semen. You may notice a reduced ejaculate volume.

While reversal surgery exists, it’s not always successful. We recommend vasectomy only if you’re sure you don’t want future biological children. UUA does not offer vasectomy reversal procedures.

Yes, but your body naturally reabsorbs it. This is normal and harmless, and no, your testicles do not explode from pressure.

You’ll be given local anesthesia (general and inhalational anaesthetic are available), so pain is minimal. Some men feel a tugging sensation. Mild soreness afterward is normal and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.

Most men can resume light activities within 1-2 days and full activities (including sex) within a week to ten days. Use birth control until the semen test confirms the procedure’s success.

Risks are low. You might experience bruising, swelling, or mild pain. Serious complications are rare.

A semen test 8-12 weeks after the procedure confirms sterility. There’s a very low chance the vas deferens can reconnect, so a follow-up test may be recommended at one year.

The procedure is covered by OHIP, however a facility fee will apply that is not covered by OHIP.
