Age-Related Vaginal Atrophy Symptoms and Treatment Options
(Postmenopausal Atrophic Vaginitis, Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause)
During menopause, a woman’s estrogen levels decrease causing a gradual thinning of the vaginal walls. This condition is known as vaginal atrophy, atrophic vaginitis, or genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM).
Vaginal atrophy symptoms include burning, dryness, decreased sensitivity, discomfort or pain during intercourse, more frequent urinary tract infections, and urge incontinence. All of these can negatively impact a woman’s self-esteem and decrease her sexual satisfaction.
Many women rely on temporary measures to manage their vaginal atrophy symptoms. Vaginal moisturizers, lubricants, and hormone replacement therapy can alleviate some of the symptoms. However, all of these methods do not treat the underlying cause and are only effective while being used. In addition, hormone replacement may interfere with other medication you may be using.
At UUA, we use Intimalase, an Erbium:YAG laser, to treat vaginal atrophy and related symptoms. Intimalase works by stimulating natural collagen production in the vaginal walls. When the tissue is rejuvenated, sensitivity, tightness and lubrication are increased once again. Intimalase doesn’t interfere with any medications and typically only one to two treatments are required to achieve the desired result. Read more about Intimalase.
Vaginal Laxity After Childbirth
During childbirth vaginal tissue can overstretch, damaging the collagen fibers and causing a feeling of looseness around the vaginal opening. This loss of tightness can lead to a decreased sensation during intercourse and diminished sexual satisfaction.
Sexual satisfaction is vital to our well-being and for maintaining healthy intimate relationships. Yet many women put off seeking help for vaginal laxity considering it a non-critical issue and others are simply unaware that accessible, effective treatments exist.
Our therapy of choice for vaginal laxity is Intimalase, a non-invasive laser therapy with lasting results that keep improving over time. Learn more about laser vaginal rejuvenation with Intimalase.
